Made in Minnesota - Why not Oregon?

On Sunday, September 29, the New York Times
ran the second in a series of articles under the heading:
AMERICAN MADE
bringing to light a recent trend in manufacturing to take back jobs in the textile industry lost to overseas workers during the last 25 years.

The Times article goes on to explain; ‘The issue wasn’t poor demand for the curtains, pillows and other textiles being produced at the factory. Quite the opposite.’ ‘… Airtex Design Group had shifted an increasing amount of its production here from China because customers had been asking for more American-made goods.’

Minneapolis has pioneered a new movement:
The Makers Coalition
in an ‘effort to create a skilled work force from scratch’. Businesses, educational institutions, non-profit organizations and service providers have joined together to establish a nationally recognized apprentice program for sewing operations.

The Dunwoody College of Technology is now offering a full degree program to train and/or retrain workers of all ages, ethnicity or anyone transitioning from a previous career. - New hope for the large national population of workers who are still unemployed as a result of the recent economic slow down.

So why does the Portland area unemployment rate remain stubbornly at a high 7.3 percent, given the large number of sportswear and outdoor gear companies headquartered here?

Honoring the pause

This morning we received a light dusting of snow.
Not too uncommon for the Portland area at this time of year.
I was so happy to see it!
Yesterday, I had felt a little agitated throughout the day. I didn't sleep well the night before. My cat was restless too.
Then this morning when I looked out, I saw that  the snow had started.
A feeling of peacefulness has returned.
I love the snow for the very reason that it causes us to give pause to our day, and forces us to rearrange our lists of priorities. I believe that everyone needs this from time to time.
Enjoy your day.

Enough is enough!

Rain. . .

 Rain. . .
Go away!

Usually, I don't really mind the rain here in Portland. There are always enough sunny and beautiful days to offset the gloom.
This year, however - not so much.
I am getting weary. . .
and very homesick.

Gone Hiking

My oldest son arrived for a visit last Friday. The weather here in Portland changed to sunny and warm, so Saturday we headed out for a day of hiking trails in Forest Park.

The beauty of the trees and undergrowth is always amazing.

Even the native 'Oregon Grape' plants displayed exceptional color.

A Northwest Snowman

When the weather changed from Fall to Winter on our calendar here, I embroidered this 'Northwest' version of a Snowman and made it into a pillow for our guest bed.

He's got moss and mushrooms growing on his arms and head. This guy is holding a hot cup of coffee, and of course it's raining instead of snowing. Very typical for our Winters here in Portland, Oregon.

I simply reduced one of my Seasonal applique patterns 50%, and traced it onto a piece of muslin. After I stitched it up, I used a little instant coffee on the whole piece to achieve an 'aged' look. Can't see much of it in the picture though. I would have liked there to be more contrast between the threads and the fabric.

One lesson learned: 'staining' the whole piece afterward also stains the threads!
